I agree, we are looking at RS, but like all the Service Desk products, most fail getting Parts, Inventory and Assets mixed up, I see it this way...
1. you have a parts and suppliers list
2. you buy parts and any to your inventory (with seprate serial numbers)
3. build from your inventrory to make an asset
you should be able to search for a serial number therefor giving a history...
