Implement a system for gift cards, where it can store the amount the gift card has, and also add credit

This thread seems to be talking about different things – so I need to get clarification if possible.
When you comment on this thread please state if you want “gift certificate support”, meaning a template to print them or something, and maybe a way to track the balance – OR -
“gift card support via Vantiv” where you have to buy magstripe cards with your design, have a Vantiv account, and deal with loading / checking balances / and the regulation that goes along with being required to allow people to cash out/etc.
We can refer to these as “basic gift certificates” or “magstripe gift cards” in the comments.
Feel free to say you want both! :)
The Vantiv “gift card support” is a fairly large project that we would need to see a lot of votes to get going.
A basic gift certificate tracking system might be simpler and then able to be built sooner. (but only if people want it)

We have a retail location and the phone repair side as well, we use rs for all and we would really like to get a gift card integrated because it feels low tech, untracable, and just bothersome that everything else integrates but this one thing. Most POS systems have gift cards built in these days... Everything is great about rs but a giftcard system would make it bettef

Not sure if this might be a a happy medium but I have recently been using GiftFly a lot and seem's to be winning over well with our customers. If there was a way to sync the customer list over to this system (Similar to how we do with Mailchimp) I think that would be a really good start (plus the system is free for the most part) They can be found on http://www.giftfly.com/

Troy, We could print out own certificates but it is beneficial to keep track of the transactions and credits. We can also track the certificate better. if they loose it or its about to expire we can have the marktr send a message out (if people would like to use that) Its nice to have it all integrated into the same system even if its basic. Just basic tracking nothing to detailed. I don't think serialized inventory is needed but maybe allow it to print off a gift receipt with the pos or inventory transaction.

About the gift cards - this gets more important around the holiday season for us. We have customers asking for gift cards. Part of our business is education -- classes. People want to buy them for their parents / grandparents so they can come in for a class. How can we accomplish this right now with the tools we have? Serialized inventory?

How many of the people that voted for this have bought a gift card to a computer repair shop?
Could you just print your own gift certificates to accomplish the same thing?
My feeling is we could probably spend our time building more important things, but let's keep this conversation going :)
